General introduction:

Astaxanthin is a powerful natural antioxidant which can remove free radicals and improve the anti-aging ability of human body. There are generally three biological sources of natural astaxanthin: waste from aquatic product processing, Phaffia Rhodozyma and microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis). It is not suitable for astaxanthin extraction from aquatic product waste because of the low concentration of waste and the high process costs. The astaxanthin concentration of Haematococcus pluvialis (1.5% – 6.0%) is much higher than that of Phaffia Rhodozyma (about 0.4%). Haematococcus pluvialis is recognized as the best organism to produce natural astaxanthin.
